Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
Anyone store these?
20 pounds organic for 60 bucks. I have heard that sprouting buckwheat unlocks a lot of vitamins (C, B etc.) that you don't get with the dry/cooked seed. What is the shelf life of a sealed bucket if left unopened? Buckwheat is VERY high in protein and carbs and many minerals. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/c...d-pasta/5682/2 |

Edit: and now that I think of it, how much does government-subsidized GMO corn cost per pound? The last time I bought popping corn it was almost $2 for a 12 oz. bag. |
Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food

Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
Probably the best part about buckwheat is that most folks don't even know it's food.

You put it in water and boil until it becomes hot cerial like oatmeal. Its protein content is very high and nearly complete amino-acid profile so it`s a top vegetarian source of protein like quinoa. |
Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
Anybody got a link for some groovy open pollinated seed?

Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
If you can find them, oat groats are also an excellent whole grain.

Hell, even my very picky hound will eat the buckwheat pancakes I make. Get my buckwheat flour at a local amish store, will look to see if they have just the seeds next time I'm there.
Think guys, the best pancakes you have ever had were probabally buckwheat. |

an used meal tray with a clear top makes a good sprouting thing. i ate at a Kentucky Fried a few days ago and thought about saving the plastic dish - the compartmented dish that comes with a clear top. actually i am doing a sprout test in dirt to see if they're viable like the sign says. i had a very strange incident of vandalism last year that makes me wonder if Monsanto has stepped up their anti-organic-wheat crusade. i have a plot at a community garden, about 14 feet square. with tomatoes, potatoes, corn etc., surrounded by a huge variety of stuff grown by other people. my wheat crop was removed - even though it was not mature yet, i.e. it had no food value. usually with vandalism the motivation is fairly obvious. e.g. my neighbor's car was keyed, i think somebody might have been pissed at him. once my car stereo was stolen, i think somebody wanted a nice car stereo for $0. but ripping out a meter square of wheat ? who would do that ? who would benefit ? what teenager or homeless person would meticulously remove a square meter of wheat ? that plus all the stories i'm hearing about wheat stockpiles at 50 year lows make me want to stock up on some wheat. especially at $1.09 a pound - it it's sproutable. The Egyptians love buckwheat and it is one of their staple foods. First comes the "Fareek" which is my preference. Fareek is the still green buckwheat which is culled early in the season to make room for later crops, and then toasted before culinary use.
It is one of the better grains out there. http://content.answers.com/main/cont...4/A4buckwh.jpg |
Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
I believe buckwheat is a fruit. Wikipedia calls it's a pseudocereal. My wife makes waffles with buckwheat flour, baking soda, cinnamon and water. Very healthy, gluten free and totally vegan as well.

Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
I never ate buckwheat until I went to Russia, but much like occam's razor, I eat it a few times per week now.
I use the toasted stuff. One part buckwheat to 2 1/2 parts water, lightly salt and put it on the fire. When the water is gone, it's done- turn the fire off before it sticks to the bottom of the pan and burns. I sometimes throw frozen veggies into the water while it is cooking. Add chopped garlic and olive oil. Buckwheat is a miracle food, and you can taste the extra iron in your body when you eat it regularly. It is not a grain, it is actually a kind of fruit. Don't waste your time grinding it. I can't count how many times I ate boiled buckwheat with a hot-dog and veg for supper. Now that I can afford it, I use chicken, but it is still my favorite meal. |
Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
Wife and I eat soba (buckwheat) noodles about once a week. Usually with grated daikon, nori (seaweed), and raw soy sauce. The leftover hot water from boiling the noodles makes a nice tea. (soba yu). If we don't drink it, we use it as a sort of soap for oily dishes. Water from boiling pasta or noodles will squeaky-clean vegetable oil from your dishes. Save soap/reuse water.
Occasionally wife will cook a dish with the buckwheat grain unmilled. Soba pillows are soothing and restful. If I recall correctly, buckwheat improves the soil and can be used as a green manure in crop rotations. Generally likes cooler climates and can be a late or early season crop. |
Re: Buckwheat Groats as an Emergency Food
Not to hi-jack thread, but Bjgnome is correct we use it on our raised beds for a green manure...grow to 6" then till in.
Also for those that may consider bulk storage I'd suggest Vacuum packed in glass jars, Mylar would probably puncture, buckwheat is a somewhat triangle shaped pointy seed. |
